Vinita Karim

Vinita Karim was born in 1962 in Rangoon, Burma, and has since established herself as an accomplished artist with a diverse multicultural background. She earned her MFA in Fine Arts from the University of the Philippines, where her dissertation focused on “Art Masala: Multicultural negotiations outside boundaries.” Prior to this, she completed a BSc in 1985 and obtained a diploma in Fine Arts from the Gerlesborg Art Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. Currently, Vinita divides her time between Dhaka and Delhi and has held 19 solo exhibitions across the globe.


Karim’s recent work centers on abstract paintings created on canvas, utilizing a rich palette of materials including oil and acrylic paints, gold leaf, and printed patterns derived from traditional kalamkari wooden blocks. Her art reflects a seamless fusion of her Indian heritage with the varied cultural influences she has absorbed while living in cities such as Stockholm, Berne, Nuremberg, Khartoum, Kuwait, New Delhi, Islamabad, Dhaka, Cairo, and Manila. This extensive exposure to different cultures has profoundly shaped her artistic vision, allowing her to blend elements from East and West, North and South, and tradition with modernity.


Through her innovative approach, Vinita Karim creates vibrant works that explore new and unexpected possibilities, bridging cultural divides and challenging conventional boundaries. Her paintings embody a dynamic dialogue between diverse artistic traditions, enriched by her global experiences and deep-rooted connections to heritage. With her unique blend of influences and a distinct abstract language, Karim continues to make a significant impact on the contemporary art scene internationally.
