Madhvi Parekh
Madhvi Parekh is an acclaimed Indian artist whose work beautifully weaves personal memory, rural life, and folk traditions into vivid visual narratives. Born in Sanjaya, a small village in Gujarat, her paintings serve as memoirs that capture stories from her childhood, the games she played, and the vibrant cultural tapestry of village life. Drawing inspiration from folk and tribal art, her work often features motifs, symbols, and decorative designs reminiscent of traditional courtyards and handmade textiles, creating a distinctive style that celebrates India’s rich heritage.
In 2006, Madhvi began experimenting with painting in reverse on glass sheets, inspired by artists like K.G. Subramanyan and Nalini Malani. This technique, which requires painting in reverse order and careful control of brushstrokes on a non-absorbent surface, challenged her artistic approach and opened new avenues for creative expression. Her mastery of this medium is exemplified in works such as ‘The Magician,’ where playful imagery and intricate details emerge with clarity and vibrancy, reflecting her lifelong fascination with the colorful performances and street entertainers of her childhood, like Ram-Lila, snake charmers, and beheroopiyas (impersonators).
Throughout her career, Madhvi Parekh has remained deeply connected to her roots while evolving as a contemporary artist. Her paintings continue to evoke the joy, wonder, and storytelling traditions of rural India, inviting viewers into a world where memory and folklore merge. Her work has been celebrated nationally and internationally, marking her as a significant voice in Indian art who bridges traditional aesthetics with innovative techniques and personal narrative.
